The short version

I’m an entrepreneur, writer, free thinker, long-distance (OK middle-distance) runner, beer connoisseur, voracious reader, and loving son, brother and boyfriend.  I live in Washington D.C. and I’m the Co-Founder and COO of Brazen Careerist.  I write about entrepreneurship, new ideas, talent, technology, lean startups, personal development, and startup life in the nations capital.

The long version

Since college I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I devoured business books, I dreamed up new ideas, and I even created my own major – Entrepreneurship. Eventually I backed out on the major and settled on a business degree, but I never stopped dreaming about starting a business and changing the world.

In 2006, after graduating from Penn State, I headed out to Washington D.C. to start my first job as a Financial Consultant with IBM.  I immediately kicked myself for ditching my entrepreneurial vision for life at a big company.  The only logical next step was to figure out how to get out of the corporate world and into the startup world.

I noticed a fascinating trend happening.  People in Corporate America couldn’t stop talking about Generation Y.  They called us lazy, entitled, selfish job hoppers who were only in it for ourselves.  The “people,” however, were all between 40 and 60 years old.  Nobody was representing Generation Y in this conversation, so I figured, why not me?

As luck would have it, I asked this question at the perfect time.  I launched EmployeeEvolution.com with an old college buddy of mine.  We responded to the Gen Y critics, told it how we saw it, and asked other twenty-something’s to contribute.  Before we knew it, the site took off. We quickly had speaking inquiries and interview requests from the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Business Week and countless HR outlets across the country. When 60 Minutes came calling for a nationally televised interview, we knew it was time to take Employee Evolution full time

Eventually that led me to co-founding Brazen Careerist, and the frozen tundra of Madison, Wisconsin.  In the years since, we’ve pivoted from a Madison based blog network to a professional social network, and finally to a Washington DC based applicant engagement platform focused on fixing the dreadfully broken process of the online job search.  We now have an amazing team of hungry, driven and talented people working hard every day, and I am lucky to be a part of it.

Personally, I live with my amazing, beautiful, talented girlfriend, Rebecca, who I first met blogging, and later convinced to move back from Madison to DC with me.  I also have an amazing family.  My brother Dan is working at an upstart digital agency in Brooklyn called Prolific Interactive and living with his girlfriend, Ashley.  My parents, Barbara and Jack, live in Connecticut and are still pursuing their life’s work, after successfully giving my brother and I the best childhood any kid could hope for.

I hope you enjoy my random thoughts, ramblings and ideas.  If you want to talk, just shoot me an email at Ryan@brazencareerist.com.
